On December 15, 2025, although continuing its prohibition of both, the U.S. Coast Guard implemented a controversial change to its workplace harassment policy that reduces its definition of swastikas and nooses from overt hate symbols to “potentially divisive.”
On D-Day, as the little LCVP pitched in the surf of Omaha Beach, Chief Photographers Mate Robert E. Sargent, United States Coast Guard, stood up in the face of fierce enemy fire and made this iconic photograph. I wonder what Chief Sargent would have to say about the Coast Guard’s relaxed definition of the swastika today.
