SUMMARY:June 7 Book Talk at New York Military Affairs Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Commemorating the 75th anniversary of D-Day\, the Invasion of Normandy\, an evening book talk on Advocating Overlord to the New York Military Affairs Symposium (NYMAS).  That so many of the soldiers\, sailors\, and airmen who participated in D-Day and the battles that followed departed from the Ports of New York and New Jersey makes this heart-of-Manhattan venue especially appropriate.  I’ll be illustrating this free talk with maps and photographs.  Hope to see you there. \nPhil PadgettPhilip Padgett examines history by applying skills developed during 40 years of national security and preparedness research and analysis in the military\, government\, and the private sector. As Deputy Intelligence Adviser at the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency\, he supported from Washington teams negotiating five international treaties and agreements. Read more >>

SUMMARY:D-Day 75th Commemoration Book Talk at FDR Library & Museum
DESCRIPTION:The FDR Library and Museum in Hyde Park\, New York\, will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings with two presentations on June 6\, 2019. A meeting at Hyde Park between President Roosevelt and Winston Churchill in August 1943 was critical to adopting the OVERLORD strategy that would begin with D-Day. I am honored to be giving a talk on Advocating Overlord\, starting at 7:00 p.m.\, at the museum on June 6. Earlier\, at 4:00 p.m.\, National Park Service Ranger Michael Zwelling will give a talk about “The Changing Memory and Symbolism of D-Day.” He will go into how recollections of D-Day vary among the nations involved\, which indeed do differ in interesting ways. Why make a day of it? Catch both talks and use the opportunity to also see the museum’s new special exhibition\, “D-Day: FDR and Churchill’s Mighty Endeavor.” Developed in cooperation with the Churchill archives and the National Cryptologic Museum\, the exhibition explores the special relationship between the two leaders and their top secret communications. This exhibit will run through January 6\, 2020.

Texas\, which appears in the Prologue\, Chapter 18\, and the Epilogue of Advocating Overlord\, escorted the fast convoy surge of troops across the Atlantic and had a special mission on D-Day in support of U.S. Army Rangers.  To speak on the book where it happened will be both an honor and a rare opportunity. \nPhil PadgettPhilip Padgett examines history by applying skills developed during 40 years of national security and preparedness research and analysis in the military\, government\, and the private sector. SUMMARY:Advocating Overlord Talk To be Broadcasted July 7 and July 8
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 7 at 4:55 PM EDT\, C-SPAN2 Book TV will broadcast their video-recording of my June 16 talk during the “Roosevelt Reading Festival” at the FDR Library and Museum. You may watch on television or go to BookTV’s website at: https://www.c-span.org/series/?bookTv  Being where key events in the book happened\, I focused on the period of July-August 1943 and highlighted events and discussions between Roosevelt and Churchill that took place at the Roosevelt Estate and Eleanor Roosevelt’s idyllic cottage\, Val-Kill. Their meetings\, August 13-15 1943\, were a key milestone on the way to agreement a week later in Quebec on Allied strategy and cooperation on the atomic bomb.  The talk will be broadcasted again by C-SPAN2 on Sunday\, July 8 at 3:55 AM EDT. Yes\, that will be “oh-dark-thirty” on the U.S. East Coast\, but not a bad time at all for friends in Europe and the Pacific. After being broadcasted\, the recording of the talk will go into Book TV’s library. That can be accessed at:https://www.c-span.org/about/videoLibrary/ \nPhil PadgettPhilip Padgett examines history by applying skills developed during 40 years of national security and preparedness research and analysis in the military\, government\, and the private sector. SUMMARY:Roosevelt Reading Festival
DESCRIPTION:Recently published books about the lives and times of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt will be featured in talks by fifteen authors at the 15th annual\, day-long Roosevelt Reading Festival.  I’m honored to be invited to give a talk on Advocating Overlord.  I’m scheduled to speak at 3:00 p.m.\, but I will be around most of the day to chat and sign books.  Fourteen authors in all will be presenting during this very interesting program.  The FDR Library and Museum is on the grounds of the Roosevelt Family’s beautiful estate where one of the book’s crucial meetings between FDR and Winston Churchill occurred in August 1943.  This also is where much of the research for Advocating Overlord was done.  So\, going “back to school to give the book report” where this history happened 75 years ago should be great fun! \nPhil PadgettPhilip Padgett examines history by applying skills developed during 40 years of national security and preparedness research and analysis in the military\, government\, and the private sector.
