SUMMARY:CANCELED - International Day of the Book - Kensington\, MD
DESCRIPTION:CANCELED BECAUSE OF COVID 19 The International Day of the Book takes over Howard Avenue in the heart of Kensington\, Maryland\, on Sunday\, April 26\, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. rain or shine. Among more than 50 authors\, I will be there selling and signing copies of the new paperback edition of Advocating Overlord – a little ahead of the official release date. Now\, about this year’s celebration in Kensington. Yes\, that is Saint George and his dragon enjoying a book together. Do you see the rose?\nRoots of the International Day of the Book go back to the Middle Ages Barcelona Rose Festival\, inspired by the story of Saint George\, that in 1923\, was merged with “el dia del libre.” That commemorates the deaths on April 23\, 1616\, of Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare. In 1995\, UNESCO marked this blended tradition as a global day to celebrate literature.\nThis year in that spirit\, the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage will participate in Kensington\, bringing representatives from Barcelona. There also will be a Veterans’ Writing Program. Add to this readings\, music\, children’s activities\, a food court\, and a chess challenge. Quite a day! Please visit the Kensington event’s website at: https://dayofthebook.com/ \nPhil PadgettPhilip Padgett examines history by applying skills developed during 40 years of national security and preparedness research and analysis in the military\, government\, and the private sector. SUMMARY:D-Day 75th Commemoration Book Talk at FDR Library & Museum
DESCRIPTION:The FDR Library and Museum in Hyde Park\, New York\, will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings with two presentations on June 6\, 2019. A meeting at Hyde Park between President Roosevelt and Winston Churchill in August 1943 was critical to adopting the OVERLORD strategy that would begin with D-Day. I am honored to be giving a talk on Advocating Overlord\, starting at 7:00 p.m.\, at the museum on June 6. Earlier\, at 4:00 p.m.\, National Park Service Ranger Michael Zwelling will give a talk about “The Changing Memory and Symbolism of D-Day.” He will go into how recollections of D-Day vary among the nations involved\, which indeed do differ in interesting ways. Why make a day of it? Catch both talks and use the opportunity to also see the museum’s new special exhibition\, “D-Day: FDR and Churchill’s Mighty Endeavor.” Developed in cooperation with the Churchill archives and the National Cryptologic Museum\, the exhibition explores the special relationship between the two leaders and their top secret communications. This exhibit will run through January 6\, 2020. \nPhil PadgettPhilip Padgett examines history by applying skills developed during 40 years of national security and preparedness research and analysis in the military\, government\, and the private sector. SUMMARY:Book Talk Aboard Battleship USS Texas
DESCRIPTION:I’ll give a talk aboard the now-104-year old\, preserved battleship USS Texas at a time to be determined on August 4. Texas\, which appears in the Prologue\, Chapter 18\, and the Epilogue of Advocating Overlord\, escorted the fast convoy surge of troops across the Atlantic and had a special mission on D-Day in support of U.S. Army Rangers.  To speak on the book where it happened will be both an honor and a rare opportunity. \nPhil PadgettPhilip Padgett examines history by applying skills developed during 40 years of national security and preparedness research and analysis in the military\, government\, and the private sector. As Deputy Intelligence Adviser at the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency\, he supported from Washington teams negotiating five international treaties and agreements. Read more >>
